Welcome to another edition of Responsible Traveller

In this edition we visit to Botswana for some ‘green season’ birding in the Makgadikgadi National Park while at Leroo la Tau, we head back into South Africa to KwaZulu-Natal for a luxury safari at the new Madwaleni River Lodge in the Babanango Game Reserve. While in KZN we talk conservation at Thanda Safari and delve deeper into the cheetah conservation work of the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

We head to Jeffreys Bay in the Eastern Cape and discover that it offers way more than just the surfing hotspot it’s famous for… and for a change of pace we head off-grid for some luxury camping at the new Samara Plains Camp in the Karoo. Before leaving the region, I enjoy a brief stay at the lovely Mantis No. 5 Boutique Art Hotel in Gqeberha and find a new appreciation for South African art! In addition to travel, we have meaningful conversations with Ernest Chaba from Desert & Delta Safaris and Nick Dickson from Dream Hotels & Resorts, as well learn about gender equality initiatives, culinary journeys, environmental initiatives, community transformation and much more.

But as always, the responsibility of being a responsible traveller lies ultimately with the person travelling and the choices they make. Remember to stay, shop, experience and ‘eat local’ and to search for off the beaten track experiences – many small businesses depend on you. This all goes a long way in helping to provide employment, contributing to the local economy, and making a difference in people’s lives.

Enjoy the read… and be the difference.
