It has been such a pleasure putting this mammoth edition of Responsible Traveller together – and, once again it is choc-a-block full of fabulous responsible tourism stories.

What a year 2021 has been! In addition to dealing with the impact of Covid-19 on our personal lives, especially from a health and livelihood perspective, it has been exceptionally challenging to those in the travel industry with continued lockdowns and irrational red lists. BUT it’s a new year and we look to the future with much positivity and enthusiasm!!

In this edition we explore all things ‘beach and bush’ in Southern Africa from the wonders of tracking leopards with Thornybush Game Lodge in Limpopo to enjoying a birding safari at Amakhosi Safari Lodge in KZN and we invite you to ‘come alive’ at Stonehill River Lodge in the Western Cape. Dawn Jorgensen and I get up-close to nature at Azura Benguerra Island off the Mozambique coast and explore the wonders of the Victoria Falls and the mighty Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. And if that’s not enough, there are plenty conservation success stories to inspire…

But as always, the responsibility of being a responsible traveller lies ultimately with the person travelling and the choices they make. Remember to stay, shop, experience and eat local and to search for the off the beaten track experiences – many small businesses are depending on you. This all goes a long way in helping to provide employment, contributing to the local economy, and making a difference in people’s lives.

Enjoy the read… and be the difference.
