Tucked away within the pristine Welgevonden Game Reserve, Tintswalo Waterberg is more than just a luxury safari lodge, it’s a sanctuary where luxury and wilderness blend seamlessly. Welcomed with a glass of bubbly and popcorn (how cool!), we have a few moments to freshen up before heading towards Tintswalo Waterberg, our home for a couple of nights. Traversing this untouched wilderness, Welgevonden’s deep commitment to conservation and protecting the environment becomes evident —the bush is pristine, streams of water run clear, and white rhino graze without the threat of poaching.

Welgevonden Game Reserve is a 38,000-hectare private reserve that plays a crucial role in conservation efforts in Limpopo. It is home to a thriving population of wildlife, including the Big Five, and a sanctuary for vulnerable species such as cheetahs and rhinos. Tintswalo Waterberg is fully integrated into these conservation initiatives, working alongside the reserve’s management team to monitor and protect its precious inhabitants.

The lodge itself blends seamlessly into the environment, utilising eco-friendly practices, employing locally and sourcing produce from local farmers.

Tintswalo Waterberg is an intimate retreat, designed with an understated elegance that complements its surroundings, and as perfect for families as it is for a romantic getaway — the new sleep-out deck overlooking a small waterhole offering the perfect romantic escape!

Earthy tones, natural textures, and expansive decks invite the outside in, ensuring that you remain connected to the wilderness beyond. The suites are luxurious yet deeply connected to nature, offering panoramic views of the surrounding bush. Waking to the calls of birds and the rustling of leaves in the morning breeze is a gentle reminder of how special this ecosystem is.

The lodge’s culinary experience is as much a highlight as the game drives. Every meal feels like a celebration, from fresh, wholesome breakfasts on the deck to long, leisurely dinners beneath the stars.

And then there’s the Amarula coffee breaks on our morning drives, G&Ts at sunset, and surprise sundowner stops, complete with roaring fire & tasty snacks. But what truly sets Tintswalo apart is its people. The team, from our ever-attentive butler Melida (who makes a cracker homemade chilli sauce) to the ever-smiling barman, Fanual, and the passionate guiding team, head guide Foster, and his tracker, Mpho, all embody Tintswalo’s genuine hospitality.

A key aspect of the lodge’s conservation ethos is its commitment to anti-poaching efforts. Welgevonden’s advanced monitoring systems help track the movement of rhinos in real-time, ensuring their safety from poaching threats. Guests who visit Tintswalo Waterberg indirectly contribute to these vital conservation efforts, as part of their stay supports the reserve’s ongoing wildlife protection programs.
Beyond the conservation work, Tintswalo Waterberg offers an unforgettable safari experience. Expert guides, including Foster and his skilled tracker Mpho, lead immersive game drives, offering insights into the reserve’s biodiversity. One morning, we watch a family of elephants at a waterhole, their interactions a beautiful display of intelligence and emotion. Later, we follow lion tracks on the dusty road and spot them ambling lazily across the grassland and witness the quiet curiosity of a crash of rhino as they saunter closer to inspect our game viewing vehicle.

We take time to appreciate the smaller, quieter moments — watching a lilac-breasted roller flash its vibrant wings, inhaling the fresh scent of wild sage crushed beneath my feet, and marvelling at the hush that falls over the bush as the sun dips below the horizon. Each moment a reminder of the raw beauty of Africa, and the privilege of being here. These details reinforce why conservation matters: they ensure that future generations will be able to experience the same awe-inspiring moments in the wild.
Downtime between game drives consists of naps, reading, pool time and of course, sumptuous meals. And strolling around the expansive fenced area – perfect for kids to have fun and for adults to enjoy a spot of birding. There are board games to be played and a kids entertainment area.

Tintswalo Lodges was founded by Ernest and Gaye Corbett, whose passion for Africa’s wilderness led them to create an intimate, immersive safari experience. Just a three- to four-hour drive from Gauteng, Tintswalo Waterberg is a sanctuary where guests can unwind while contributing to the protection of one of South Africa’s most biodiverse reserves.

As our final morning unfolds, a lone giraffe lingers by the roadside, its graceful silhouette framed against the sky. It’s a reminder that places like this are worth fighting for. Tintswalo Waterberg isn’t just about luxury — it’s about preserving a landscape, and a legacy for generations to come.
