Lapalala Wilderness School wins Architectural Merit Award from the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) in the Limpopo Region. Usually, when thinking about architectural awards, iconic landmarks, office buildings, stately homes and hotels or safari lodges come to mind.

The renowned eco Lapalala Wilderness School, situated in the UNESCO Waterberg biosphere reserve, part of the famous Lapalala Wilderness Reserve in Limpopo, has been awarded an Architectural Merit from the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) in the Limpopo Region.

They were subsequently entered into the International Awards, held at the annual World Architecture Festival in Singapore in November 2023. Lapalala Wilderness School won Joint Second Place and a Highly Commended Award from amongst schools and many other worldwide contestants.

Designed by Local Studio Architects, the new Lapalala Wilderness School Campus opened in November 2022 and is a true off-the-grid, eco-build with Net Zero Carbon status, merging seamlessly into the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The school is an environmental education centre in the Waterberg, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, in Limpopo, South Africa. It conducts environmental and conservation centered programmes for approximately 3000 students annually, most of them from local communities within the Waterberg region.

“It was an incredible honour to have been nominated by architects Local Studio. Making the shortlist was exciting, but receiving second place in the Schools Category is beyond my wildest imagination. The added kudos of being Highly Commended makes me proud of the creativity of architecture in this country.” says Lapalala Wilderness School Director Mashudu Makhokha.
